Intro.

Tianmen Mountain—home to the famous Heaven's Gate—is one of the must-see attractions in Zhangjiajie, China. Its signature landmark is Tianmen Cave, a massive natural arch reached by the staircase known as the 999 Steps. I’m sure you have seen it somewhere on social media…it’s pretty iconic!

However, what most reels and TikToks don’t share is how to choose the right route, what to see, and how to optimize your trip to save energy and time.

Visiting Tianmen Mountain can be unnecessarily confusing. This guide explains exactly how the lines work in 2026, which one I would choose, and how to explore the summit to get the most out of your trip.

Where is Tianmen Mountain?

Tianmen Mountain is beside central Zhangjiajie in Yongding District. This is not the same place as Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The easiest way to organize a Zhangjiajie trip is to think in three general clusters:

  1. Downtown Zhangjiajie and Yongding: Tianmen Mountain, downtown city, and Seven Star Mountain (also known as the Sky Ladder)

  2. Wulingyuan and the wider park area: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yellow Dragon Cave and nearby attractions. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is farther east but is usually grouped into this part of an itinerary.

  3. Outlying historic towns: Furong Town and Fenghuang Ancient Town, which require separate road or rail journeys.

For Tianmen Mountain, stay downtown if you can. The lower station of the main cableway is in the urban area, surrounded by hotels, restaurants and shops. My suggestion is to stay close to the station.

Wulingyuan is about 30–60 minutes away by road, depending on your exact hotel and traffic. If you are spending multiple days inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, staying in Wulingyuan will save time, and you can then take a day-trip out to Tianmen Mountain. My suggestion is to spend a few nights downtown for Tianmen Mountain, Seven Star Mountain, and the historic towns, then move to Wulingyuan for the national park.

If you’re pressed for time but have energy, I would suggest doing Tianmen Mountain in the morning/day until 3PM, rest at your hotel for a bit, and finishing the evening at Furong Ancient Town before returning to your hotel, as you don’t really need more than 2-3 hours in Furong Town, and it is best seen in the evening in my opinion.

Downtown → Take the lower section of main cableway from the Lower (down) Station to Middle Station → bus uphill to the Square → walk 999 Steps or take the paid cave escalator up → ride the seven-section trans-mountain escalator up to summit → explore summit → back track to the Square → take the express cableway down to Mountain Gate → shuttle or Didi back to downtown.

Line B

Downtown → shuttle or Didi to Mount Gate → take the express cableway from the Lower (down) eup to the → walk 999 Steps or take the paid cave escalator up → ride the seven-section trans-mountain escalator up to summit → explore summit → back track to the Square → take the express cableway down to Mountain Gate → shuttle or Didi back to downtown.
